How To Write Copy That Sells

If you think about it, it’s easy for people to get distracted by so many things, such as texts, e-mail notifications and Twitter mentions. You literally have a short window to capture your reader’s attention and provide your audience with information they are seeking, or they will move on.

 Whether you are selling products or services, one of the most important skills you can develop is the skill of writing irresistible copy that sells. Copy is the text you use to persuade your readers or audience to take a specific action. This copy may be used in media such as sales emails, on web pages or in sales brochures. Even for visual channels like YouTube and Instagram you still need to write a compelling headline to get people to view your video.

Here are 4 tips you can use to help you write compelling copy that sells:

 1) Know Your “Whys”

Before clients and customers decide to buy from you, they want to know one thing: Why?

Why should they buy it from you? Why should they trust you? Why is the product important? Why should they be interested?

Whether we like to admit it or not, all of those questions (and maybe more) are going through a customer’s head. If you want them to act, you need to answer them, and that means making sure that your copy is informative.

2) Get to the Point

Get to the basics and start with the most important information first, before any background information or details. This allows your reader to know what you are talking about, even if they didn’t read everything. The further down an article or page you scroll, the more readers decrease in number, so leave less important details down there.

Many marketers love to be cute, funny, original and innovative…but it’s also dangerous. Most people are probably in a hurry, they don’t set aside time to read ads. Often, they take a quick glance before they move on to something else. If your point isn’t immediately obvious, chances are they won’t get it, and you risk losing them forever.

 3) Be concise

This means not using more words than necessary. You want to quickly and efficiently give your reader important information. You want your information to be easy to read and easy to understand.

  • Use lists, bullet points and bold sub-headings. These allow various methods to enable quick scanning
  • Make your copy as eye-friendly as possible. Keep your grammar and spelling excellent, and avoid too much italicizing, CAPITALS or highlighting
  • Break up long paragraphs into shorter ones
  • Avoid long intros. Even though they could be creative and well written, chances are your audience may not have time to really become immersed in your efforts

4. Be Persuasive

You know your copy is good if your readers take the action you want them to take. Make it easy for your audience and tell them what to do next.

Would you like your readers to take a specific action? To buy something? Sign up to your newsletter? Leave a comment? Follow you on Twitter? Like you on Facebook?

Whatever the action is, be sure to encourage your audience to take it.
