Public speaking is one of the best ways to build and promote your individual brand or company, and is often the most overlooked. It can be an exhilarating experience and a great way to help boost your reputation, market yourself and build awareness of your business brand.
If you read my last blog post “Why You Should Embrace Public Speaking”, you will recall that public speaking serves as a significant opportunity for anyone with a niche area of expertise to contribute- and not just for self promotion but for personal growth as well.
Ready to start? Here are 4 ways you can begin public speaking this month:
- Know what to speak about: This seems obvious; however, it’s important to figure out where your expertise and passions lie. Understanding this can help you identify what you are prepared to speak about, versus something you think you want to talk about. It is often better to give a talk on a very specific topic you are an expert in rather than discussing a general topic where you have less knowledge to offer. Even if you think you have nothing valuable to say, you would be surprised. Sharing experiences of balancing career and family, how a hobby turned into a business or why you left your career to work from home are all great examples.
- Identify and attend events you would like to speak at: It’s important to do your homework and research what types of events to speak at. Pay attention to the kinds of speakers at your target events, and get to know the organizers. You will be more likely invited to speak, or more likely to be accepted if you ask.
- Set up a blog: Blogging is a fantastic way to establish yourself as an expert. Though blogging may not be as popular as Twitter or Facebook, a well-thought out blog can have real staying power. If you write about the same specific topics consistently and intelligently, over time you will increase your value as an expert. Don’t believe me? Check out some popular bloggers such as Food Babe and Organic Bunny, both of which have specific niches and major followings.
- Take Action: There’s a saying that actions speak louder than words, and that holds true for public speaking as well. Work with integrity, show you are good at what you do, and people will take notice. Nothing beats action.
